"Dodo Pizza" is trying to return the username of its channel through the court

In May, Dodo Franchising filed a lawsuit with the Arbitration Court of the Komi Republic against Telegram FZ-LLC, demanding the return of the username of its Telegram channel. The meeting was scheduled for December 16, 2024.

According to the company's lawyers, the current rules of Telegram allow anyone to buy out usernames of well-known brands, which is actively used by scammers to extort money from copyright holders.

The company took possession of the username back in 2018, but it was later withdrawn, presumably for inactivity. In 2022, the username was purchased on the Fragment platform for 1865 TON, and is now being sold for $1 million.

“Dodo Pizza” intends to seek through the court the transfer of the channel’s username and amendments to the terms of use of Telegram prohibiting such actions.

“The essence of our claim is the presence of such a field of activity for fraudsters, since the current rules of Telegram are fraught with reputational risks for bona fide market participants,” said Alexandra Akimova, senior lawyer for IP and Privacy at Dodo Pizza.
