Amsterdam Bans Telegram for Civil Servants

The Amsterdam administration has banned city officials from using the Telegram messenger. The main reasons for the ban are the potential risk of espionage and the active use of the application by criminals, in particular for drug trafficking.

The decision to ban was made in April but was not announced publicly. The city government expressed concern about Telegram's possible ties to the Russian government, which could pose a security threat.

The ban applies to government officials' work phones. However, Telegram remains popular in the Netherlands, where it is used by about 1.9 million people.

Cybersecurity experts believe the measure is justified, pointing to Telegram's lack of standard end-to-end encryption. Telegram is now on the "blacklist" of apps along with TikTok and WeChat.

Non-profit organizations Offlimits and Stichting Stop Bangalijsten are calling on the European Commission to take action against the spread of harmful content on Telegram, considering the authorities' inaction "incomprehensible."

PAVEL DUROV FACES 20 YEARS IN PRISON IN FRANCE

Telegram founder Pavel Durov is set to appear before a judge on Saturday evening, facing multiple charges, including terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering, and child abuse content.

French media report that Durov, a dual French and Russian citizen, could face up to 20 years in prison.

His arrest is attributed to Telegram's lack of content moderation and his failure to cooperate with French law enforcement.

The charges stem from a search warrant issued by the French National Directorate of Judicial Police.

I've been reading the news about Durov's recent arrest, and I agree that it's absurd to hold a CEO responsible for crimes committed on his platform. However, we shouldn't overlook the fact that Telegram has significant issues with content moderation, especially regarding child pornography, drugs, and other illegal activities. Despite many reports, a lot of this content remains active. I hope Durov takes decisive action to address these problems. Nonetheless, we at @NewsAndTipsNT stand with Durov.

I have seen false information regarding France following the arrest of Pavel Durov.

France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship. It will remain so.

In a state governed by the rule of law, freedoms are upheld within a legal framework, both on social media and in real life, to protect citizens and respect their fundamental rights.

It is up to the judiciary, in full independence, to enforce the law.

The arrest of the president of Telegram on French soil took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation. It is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to rule on the matter.

ABU DHABI, 27th August, 2024 (WAM) -- The UAE is closely following the case of its citizen Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, who was arrested by the French authorities in Paris-Le Bourget Airport, emphasising that the UAE has submitted a request to the Government of the French Republic to provide him with all the necessary consular services in an urgent manner.

Many channels have reported that the 'People Nearby' feature is not working properly or doesn't show geo chats and nearby users. We believe that Telegram has cleaned up inactive accounts and chats, as many old accounts and chats that haven't been active for a long time are now gone. It seems there's a new criteria for showing people nearby; only users who are currently active and have location services enabled are now visible in the 'People Nearby' section.
